Becoming a B Corp: a demanding yet deeply transformative journey for Luxexpo The Box

Obtaining B Corp certification is a source of pride, but above all, it’s a journey filled with challenges. At Luxexpo The Box, this process was anything but superficial: it required over two years of hard work, deep reflection, and fundamental reassessment.
This certification, internationally recognized for its high standards in social and environmental performance, transparency, and governance, goes far beyond a checklist of best practices, it demands a structural and cultural transformation of the company. And for an event organization like ours, the challenge was significant.

UNDERSTANDING THE TRUE SCOPE OF THE PROCESS

The first challenge was grasping the full extent of the B Corp journey. It’s not just a label : it’s a 360-degree evaluation that requires a thorough review of every pillar of the company: governance, human relations, environmental responsibility, community engagement, and customer impact. This level of rigor calls for full commitment across the board.

ADAPTING OUR INFRASTRUCTURE TO A DEMANDING FRAMEWORK

Luxexpo The Box is a large-scale venue with versatile, technical spaces and a high level of activity. Adapting our physical infrastructure to B Corp standards was a massive undertaking.

This meant:

  • Rethinking the site’s energy management,

  • Optimizing waste flows and strengthening recycling processes,

  • Improving accessibility,

  • Integrating environmental criteria into the management of our buildings and technical facilities.

Bringing a site of this size up to standard while continuing to host events was a true technical and logistical challenge.

ENGAGING OUR TEAMS AT EVERY LEVEL

Becoming a B Corp is a collective journey. To truly bring this transformation to life, we had to involve all teams from operational staff to strategic leadership.

Changing habits, rethinking priorities, and integrating impact-driven goals into day-to-day work required:

  • Dedicated time for training and dialogue,

  • Ongoing awareness-building efforts,

  • And most importantly, time for everyone to embrace and internalize this new culture.

ENGAGING ALL OUR STAKEHOLDERS, INCLUDING SUPPLIERS AND SERVICE PROVIDERS

Another major challenge was extending our commitment to our entire ecosystem. B Corp doesn’t only evaluate what happens internally, it also assesses the quality of relationships with all stakeholders.

In the event industry, this means:

  • Working with local and responsible service providers,

  • Choosing suppliers who share our values,

  • Asking certain partners to review their own practices to align with more sustainable approaches.

Not everyone is immediately ready to follow — so we must convince, support, and sometimes make difficult choices.

GUIDING OUR CLIENTS TOWARD RESPONSIBLE EVENTS

In this spirit, one initiative is especially close to our hearts: the Green Business Events label, supported by the Luxembourg Ministry of the Economy. This label promotes more responsible events by highlighting sustainable practices throughout the entire organization from resource management and mobility to responsible communication and waste reduction.

At Luxexpo The Box, we are fully committed to obtaining the Green Business Events label for all of our events. More than that, we’ve developed a dedicated approach to help our clients earn this certification: offering guidance, practical tools, recommendations on service providers, and best practices.

Our goal is to make the path to more sustainable events simple, accessible, and rewarding.

STRUCTURING AND DOCUMENTING OUR PRACTICES

The B Corp process requires concrete proof of every commitment. It’s not enough to have good practices, they must be documented, measured, and justified.

This means gathering a wide range of documents, data, and supporting materials, often spread across different departments. Every response in the assessment must be backed by verifiable evidence: internal policies, reports, tracking tables, contracts, impact documentation…

This task required the involvement of all teams, as each held a piece of the puzzle. It was a meticulous, detailed, and time-consuming effort, a true collective undertaking that united us around a shared goal. Thanks to this joint effort, we were able to structure and centralize our practices to meet B Lab’s demanding standards.

Tangible results are already beginning to emerge, as demonstrated by our Long Live The Summer 2024 event:

Out of the 862 kg of waste generated, 76% was recovered and sent to recycling channels, confirming our commitment to reducing our ecological footprint. In addition, the distribution of 3,500 eco-cups helped avoid the use of an equivalent number of single-use cardboard or plastic containers.

IN CONCLUSION: DEMANDING, BUT TRANSFORMATIVE

Earning B Corp certification was a demanding journey at times challenging but deeply rewarding.

It allowed us to undergo a profound transformation, to unite our teams around a shared vision, and to strengthen our positive impact, for our clients, our partners, our community, and the environment.

Today, we understand that this certification is far more than just a label: it’s a guiding direction, a long-term commitment, and a living promise we will continue to nurture, day after day.
